what is a chunk?
ReplyDeleteQ: What is a chunk?
ReplyDeleteA: Remember the “5 part paragraph?” The 5 parts are:
1. Topic sentence
2. Point with transition sentence, followed by a concrete detail and two commentaries
3. Same as part 2
4. Same as part 2
5. Concluding sentence
Well, a “chunk” refers to one of those middle parts (2-4) from the 5 part paragraph.
In other words, a “chunk” is your point with transition sentence and the concrete detail and 2 commentaries you use to prove that point. Each “chunk” in a body paragraph works to prove the topic sentence or “mini-thesis” for the body paragraph.
In a 2 chunk body paragraph you have two sections of support for your thesis in that paragraph.

These two negative emotions and his willingness to accept, ignore, or act upon them throughout his childhood, adolescence and adulthood lead Pip to learn that self-acceptance is key to living a fulfilling life.
Topic Sentence for 1st Body Paragraph: When Pip is young the choices he makes and the company he encounters plant the seeds of shame for who he is and guilt about how he internalizes these feelings.
*Three-fold Transition Sentence for 2nd Body Paragraph: Seemingly miraculously, Pip is presented with the opportunities he’s been pining for: a chance to leave his common circumstances behind and avoid remorse in the name of self-improvement.
